Working in the UK – Tier 1 Visas

Tier 1 – General Visa (HSMP)

Important Note: New applications under the Tier 1 (General) category are no longer accepted by UKVI. However, extensions remain available for those already holding this visa.
The Tier 1 (General) visa, which replaced the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP), was part of the UK’s points-based system and allowed highly skilled workers to work or be self-employed in the UK. While the category is now closed to new applicants, current Tier 1 (General) visa holders and HSMP participants may still apply for extensions.
Extension Criteria:
Applicants for an extension are assessed based on points awarded for factors such as:

  • Age
  • Qualifications
  • English language proficiency
  • Financial maintenance

Upon receiving an extension, individuals can remain in the UK and, after 5 years of residence, may apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) if they meet additional criteria.
Dependents:
Spouses, civil partners, and children under 18 are eligible to join Tier 1 (General) visa holders in the UK.
